Larry Magid's Essential Internet v. 1.0 - README.TXT File This file includes information on installing Larry Magid's Essential Internet and information on other readme files for other programs in the package. Contents -------- Section 1 - Other README files Section 2 - Requirements for using Essential Internet Section 3 - Running Essential Internet Section 4 - Troubleshooting Section 5 - Using Connection Helper Section 6 - Contacting Quarterdeck Section 1 - Other README files =============================== Essential Internet is composed of a number of different applications. Each application has its own README.TXT file in its respective subdirectory. The README files are very important because they contain last minute information about the products. README.TXT files can be found in the following subdirectories (assuming the software has been installed in the default directories). Quarterdeck Mosaic c:\inet\qmosaic\readme.txt Quarterdeck Message Center c:\inet\qmc\readme.txt QWinsock and Location Mgr. c:\inet\qwinsock\readme.txt Section 2 - Requirements for using Essential Internet ====================================================== 1. An i486SX, i486 or Pentium system or compatible 2. Windows 95, Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3. 15 megabytes of available disk space are required for installation, although free disk space is required for data storage. 4. 8MB of RAM 5. Double-speed CD-ROM drive 6. Sound Card with speakers 7. 256 color VGA capable display or better. 8. For dial-up access to the Internet, a 9600bps or greater modem Section 3 - Running Essential Internet ====================================== Running the Program Essential Internet can be launched at any time by clicking on the Essential Internet QMosaic icon in the Essential Internet program group. When it is run, the Essential Internet home page will be displayed by default. The Home Page is the focal point for using Essential Internet. Screen Color Shift When Animations are loaded Essential Internet includes many animations, in which the Larry Magid character guides you through the Internet. Each time you run Essential Internet, you may notice that when the first animation is loaded, the screen colors change (the pallette shifts). This occurs when the animation player program is loaded into memory, as it analyzes and adjusts the pallette. It occurs only when the first animation is loaded. When additional animations are loaded, this will not repeat. Location of Animation Files The animation files remain on the CD-ROM and are not copied to the hard disk during installation. Therefore, the CD must in the CD-ROM drive when animations are being viewed. It is possible to use Essential Internet without the CD. All of the local Home Pages are on the hard disk. However, when clicking on a link to an animation you must have the CD in the drive. Using the CD-ROM drive Essential Internet determines the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (C,D,E, etc...) during installation. This information is stored in the QMOSAIC.INI file, which is typically found in c:\inet\qmosaic. It is stored as a text string in that file: CDROM=n where n is a number. The values of n are Drive A=0, B=1, C=2, D=3, E=4 and so on. For example, if the CD-ROM drive is drive E, the setting in QMOSAIC.INI would be: CDROM=4 Section 4 - Troubleshooting =========================== Your CD-ROM drive is drive letter K or greater. If your CD-ROM drive is designated by letter K or greater, the CDROM= setting in QMOSAIC.INI may be incorrect. In most cases, the CD-ROM drive is a letter less than K, so this should not be a problem. Please refer to Section 3, Running Essential Internet, Using the CD-ROM, drive for information on configuring the software to use the CD-ROM. Section 5 - Using Connection Helper =================================== The Connection Helper is used to set up your system for Internet access. It can be launched at any time from Essential Internet Home Pages by clicking on the Sign Up for Internet Service graphic. It can also be run manually at anytime via Location Manager. The Connection Helper is used to go through a step-by-step process of creating a Location and Provider in Location Manager. When run for the first time, Connection Helper creates a Default Location. Therefore, Location Manager will have one Location. If Connection Helper is run at a later time via Location Manager, it will modify whatever the currently selected Location is. For example, if you one two locations, Home and Office, and Office is the currently location when the Connection Helper is run, all the options for the Office location will change. Therefore, if you want to create a NEW location, you should select Add Location from Location Manager, rather than run the Connection Helper.
